Position Summary


The Facilities Specialist is dedicated to a specific facility and is responsible for civil, survey and geophysical support therein.  The position receives direction from the Thompson Engineering Site Manager, and is responsible for underground utility locations and markings inside the refinery, supporting the clearing of excavation permits, QA of all new civil foundations, clearing pour cards, layout of groundwork for new construction, coverage during shutdowns/turnarounds, and hydrographic surveys (manual soundings) within the facility.


Essential Functions of the Position


  1. Understands the theories and principles, as well as the practical application and execution of a geophysical survey for the purpose of locating utilities, voids and other underground features. Able to positively and repeatably locate and identify underground features.  Able to differentiate between underground features such as piping, conduits, duct banks, cabling, voids, disturbed soil strata, etc.


  1. Operates Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Radio Frequency (RF) equipment in the performance of utility and voids scans.


  1. Operates total station, digital and automatic level, Topcon data collector, and TDS software in the performance of topographic surveys, construction layouts and stakeouts, construction QA, pile layouts, planimetric surveys, etc.


  1. Operates AutoCAD and/or Civil3D effectively, in the development of as-built drawings, survey drawings, material volumes, and archive drawing searches.


  1. Maintains detailed field notes and sketches of work being performed. Interprets drawings.  Understands technical aspects of the related work. 


  1. Aids Site Manager with clearing permits.


  1. Conducts all work activities in compliance with Thompson Holdings, Inc. Health, Safety & Environmental Management System, safety policies & procedures, safety execution plans and Job Safety and Environmental Analyses. Attend and pro-actively participate in monthly safety meetings, project toolbox safety meetings and safety moments.


  1. On time and consistent attendance is required. Overtime, especially during Shutdown/Turnaround coverage, is essential to the position. 



Other Responsibilities


  1. Other duties, in support of the department (including as-needed cross-training in other roles), as required.



Minimum Requirements


  1. High school diploma or equivalent.


  1. Able to read and comprehend drawings, work orders, and measurements.


  1. Intermediate math skills which include trigonometry and geometry.


  1. Five (5) years' experience in geophysical scanning, topographic/planimetric surveying, and mapping utilizing AutoCAD or Civil3D.


  1. Able to communicate effectively with others. Able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.


  1. Must have effective working knowledge of survey levels, total stations, data collectors, and GPS software using the Topcon Hyperlite. Must have effective working knowledge of GPR and RF equipment.


  1. Must have effective working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil3D.


Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to work in the outside elements of the field up to 100% of the time.


  1. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs.


  1. Required to remain standing for a minimum of eight (8) hours per day and walk long distances.


  1. Must be able to bend, stoop and climb on a ladder.


  1. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.


  1. Must be able to work a flexible schedule and overtime as needed for needs of the department.
